When to convert PNG to JPG

A website or form has a file-size limit and your PNG photo or screenshot is too large.

You want to email or share many images and smaller files matter more than pixel-perfect quality.

A service accepts only JPG uploads.

Transparency becomes a background colour

JPG has no alpha channel. Soft edges, drop shadows and cut-out logos that looked correct on a checkerboard in PNG will sit on the solid background colour you choose (often white). Screenshot text survives better at higher quality settings but can show faint compression halos if you push quality too low—inspect at 100% zoom before sending a UI capture to a bug tracker. If you still need transparency, stay on PNG or use WebP with alpha instead of forcing JPG.

About PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and diagrams stay sharp no matter how often you save them. It supports full transparency through an alpha channel. The downside is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

About JPG

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported image format in the world. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs, which keeps files small while looking natural to the eye. It does not support transparency, and sharp edges such as text can show faint blocky artefacts at lower quality settings.

How it works

The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.

Limitations

Very large PNGs (tens of megapixels) need a lot of memory, especially on phones.

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).

The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.

How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PNG to JPG converter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and your images are never sent to a server.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and listed for download.

Why is the converted file bigger or smaller?

PNG and JPG compress images differently. Lossless PNG files are usually larger, while lossy JPG and WebP files are usually smaller; the exact result depends on the picture and the quality setting.

Why did my logo grow a white box?

The PNG used transparency. JPG filled those pixels with the selected background. Re-export with a background that matches the destination page, or keep PNG/WebP when the host supports them.
