When to convert JPG to PNG

A design tool, game engine, printing service or upload form asks specifically for PNG.

You plan to edit the image several times and do not want each save to add more JPG compression.

You are going to remove the background later and need a format that can hold transparency.

PNG will not restore lost JPEG detail

Converting JPG to PNG stores the already-decoded pixels losslessly from that point on; it cannot invent detail discarded when the JPG was first saved. Expect the PNG to be larger—sometimes much larger—than the JPG. Use this direction when a tool chain requires PNG, when you want to avoid further JPEG saves during editing, or when you will add transparency in another editor afterward (the conversion itself does not create a meaningful alpha from a photo). For email size problems, converting JPG→PNG usually makes things worse.

About JPG

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported image format in the world. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs, which keeps files small while looking natural to the eye. It does not support transparency, and sharp edges such as text can show faint blocky artefacts at lower quality settings.

About PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and diagrams stay sharp no matter how often you save them. It supports full transparency through an alpha channel. The downside is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

How it works

The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.

Limitations

Converting a JPG does not restore detail that was lost when it was first compressed.

PNG output is lossless, so files converted from photos are often much larger than the original.

The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.

How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this JPG to PNG converter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and your images are never sent to a server.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and listed for download.

Why is the converted file bigger or smaller?

JPG and PNG compress images differently. Lossless PNG files are usually larger, while lossy JPG and WebP files are usually smaller; the exact result depends on the picture and the quality setting.

Will JPG to PNG improve quality for printing?

No. You keep the current pixels without additional JPEG loss going forward, but you do not recover what the original JPG discarded. Start from a higher-quality master if print quality is insufficient.
