When to convert PNG to WebP
You run a website and want faster pages by serving smaller images.
Your page-speed report recommends serving images in next-generation formats.
You need to keep transparency but want a smaller file than PNG.
Transparency kept; older office apps may not open WebP
PNG to WebP is a strong choice for websites that already serve WebP: files often shrink while alpha can remain. The trade-off is compatibility—some desktop Outlook builds, older Office insert-picture flows and a few CMS fields still reject .webp. When the consumer is a human mailbox or a legacy CMS, deliver JPG/PNG instead and reserve WebP for your own front end. Lossless versus lossy WebP changes size dramatically; preview text-heavy screenshots before choosing an aggressive lossy setting.
About PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and diagrams stay sharp no matter how often you save them. It supports full transparency through an alpha channel. The downside is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
About WebP
WebP is a format introduced by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation. Websites use it because it is usually smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality, and all current major browsers display it. Many desktop programs, older phones, print services and upload forms still do not accept WebP, which is why people often need to convert it.
How it works
The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.
Limitations
Very large PNGs (tens of megapixels) need a lot of memory, especially on phones.
WebP encoding depends on the browser's encoder. The tool checks the returned MIME type and file signature; if WebP output is unsupported, it reports an error instead of saving another format under a WebP name. Use PNG or JPG, or a browser that supports WebP encoding.
The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.
How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Frequently asked questions
Is this PNG to WebP converter free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and your images are never sent to a server.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and listed for download.
Why is the converted file bigger or smaller?
PNG and WebP compress images differently. Lossless PNG files are usually larger, while lossy JPG and WebP files are usually smaller; the exact result depends on the picture and the quality setting.
Why does my browser fail to produce WebP?
Displaying WebP and encoding it are different capabilities. This tool checks the actual output type and signature and reports an error if the browser cannot encode WebP. Choose PNG or JPG, or use a browser with WebP encoding support; a browser name alone does not establish its capabilities.
Should I replace every PNG on my drive with WebP?
No. Convert where you control the viewers. Keep PNG/JPG masters for archival and for partners who cannot open WebP.
