When to convert AVIF to PNG

The AVIF image has a transparent background that must be preserved.

You want to edit the image in a program that does not support AVIF.

You need a lossless copy for a design or documentation workflow.

AVIF support differs by browser

AVIF decoding depends on your browser’s image decoder. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and recent Safari generally work; older browsers and some embedded webviews fail with a decode error even though the file is valid. If conversion fails immediately, retry in an updated Chrome or Firefox, or open the AVIF in a native viewer and export PNG there. Prefer AVIF→PNG when you need lossless-friendly editing or transparency; choose a JPG route when the destination is email and size matters more than alpha.

About AVIF

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media. It often compresses better than WebP and JPG, and supports transparency and high dynamic range. Browser support for viewing AVIF is broad today (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16 and later), but many image editors, office programs and websites cannot open or accept AVIF files yet.

About PNG

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and diagrams stay sharp no matter how often you save them. It supports full transparency through an alpha channel. The downside is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

How it works

The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.

Limitations

Your browser must be able to decode AVIF. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ can; older browsers will show an error. Animated AVIF is converted as a single frame.

PNG output is lossless, so files converted from photos are often much larger than the original.

The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.

How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Managed browsers or older enterprise builds may lack AVIF support. Update the browser if policy allows, or convert on a personal up-to-date browser and transfer the PNG.
