When to convert BMP to JPG

A scanner or old program saved your pictures as BMP and they are too big to email.

A website upload form rejects .bmp files.

You want to archive many bitmap screenshots without using a lot of disk space.

BMP is usually an uncompressed office leftover

Classic Windows BMP often stores pixels with little or no compression, so a single screenshot can be tens of megabytes. That makes BMP a poor email citizen and a common output from older scanning or classroom software. Converting to JPG (or PNG if you need lossless text) is usually the first cleanup step. Rare BMP variants (unusual bit depths or compression flags) may fail in the browser decoder—re-save as a standard 24-bit BMP from Paint or export PNG from the original app if that happens.

About BMP

BMP (bitmap) is the original Windows image format. Most BMP files store pixels without compression, so they open almost anywhere but are very large: a single full-HD screenshot can take around 6 MB. Older scanners, industrial software and Windows Paint still produce BMP files, and many websites and email services reject them or limit their size.

About JPG

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported image format in the world. It uses lossy compression tuned for photographs, which keeps files small while looking natural to the eye. It does not support transparency, and sharp edges such as text can show faint blocky artefacts at lower quality settings.

How it works

The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.

Limitations

Your browser decodes the BMP. Common 24-bit and 32-bit BMP files work; rare variants (for example some compressed or 16-bit files) may fail in some browsers.

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).

The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.

How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this BMP to JPG converter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and your images are never sent to a server.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and listed for download.

Why is the converted file bigger or smaller?

BMP and JPG compress images differently. Lossless PNG files are usually larger, while lossy JPG and WebP files are usually smaller; the exact result depends on the picture and the quality setting.

Why is my BMP huge compared with a photo JPG?

BMP commonly stores raw pixels. JPG compresses photographs efficiently. After conversion, delete or archive the BMP if you no longer need an uncompressed master.
