When to convert HEIC to PNG
You want to edit an iPhone photo in software that does not read HEIC and prefer a lossless starting point.
You need PNG specifically, for example for a design template or a document.
You are on a Windows PC without the HEIF and HEVC extensions installed.
When PNG is worth the larger file
Choose HEIC to PNG when the subject is a screenshot, UI panel, whiteboard photo with fine writing, or any image you will edit further without wanting another JPEG generation. PNG keeps sharp edges and optional transparency handling in downstream tools, but camera-photo PNGs are often several times larger than a high-quality JPG of the same pixels. If an upload form caps file size tightly, convert to JPG instead—or convert to PNG for editing, then export a final JPG for submission. Transparency is irrelevant for ordinary Camera Roll portraits; it matters for graphics with soft edges on non-rectangular shapes.
About HEIC
HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It stores images compressed with HEVC (H.265) inside the HEIF container, which saves storage compared with JPG. Windows, many Android phones and most websites do not open HEIC without extra software.
About PNG
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and diagrams stay sharp no matter how often you save them. It supports full transparency through an alpha channel. The downside is size: a photograph saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
How it works
The page loads the conversion code into your browser: it decodes the image into pixels, then writes it with the browser's image encoder (or packages PNG images inside an ICO file). Conversion does not send the selected images to a conversion server. Closing the tab clears its working data; downloaded files remain on your device. Page, script, advertising or analytics requests are separate from file processing; see Privacy.
Limitations
HEIC decoding uses the open-source libheif decoder compiled to JavaScript, so it is slower than native formats and uses more memory; convert large batches a few files at a time. Only the first image of a multi-image HEIC file is exported.
PNG output is lossless, so files converted from photos are often much larger than the original.
The output is a new image drawn by the browser, so camera metadata (EXIF, such as date and GPS location) is generally not kept, and embedded colour profiles may not be preserved.
How large a file you can convert depends on your device's memory; on phones, convert a few files at a time.

Frequently asked questions
Is this HEIC to PNG converter free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and your images are never sent to a server.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and listed for download.
Why is the converted file bigger or smaller?
HEIC and PNG compress images differently. Lossless PNG files are usually larger, while lossy JPG and WebP files are usually smaller; the exact result depends on the picture and the quality setting.
Will PNG preserve my HEIC better than JPG?
PNG avoids an extra lossy JPEG step after decode, which helps screenshots and text. It does not reconstruct detail already limited by the HEIC source, and the file is usually larger. For email-sized portraits, JPG is typically the better end format.
