iPhone HEIC to JPG: AirDrop, Mail, and failure edges

iPhone photos frequently leave the Camera Roll as HEIC. Windows PCs, many web forms and some mail clients still expect JPG. This guide covers system-side settings, a browser conversion on this site, and the failure edges—Live Photos, huge originals, unsupported variants—so you can pick a path that finishes instead of renaming the extension and hoping.

Why HEIC appears and where sharing breaks

Since iOS 11, many iPhones default to High Efficiency Image Format (HEIC) to save space at similar visual quality. Sharing to another Apple device via AirDrop usually works. Problems show up when the destination is a Windows laptop without HEIC codecs, an employer portal that whitelists jpeg/png only, or a desktop mail client that attaches the HEIC unchanged and leaves the recipient unable to open it.

Typical symptoms: “unsupported file type”, a blank thumbnail, or a download that still ends in .heic. Renaming .heic to .jpg does not re-encode the file; it only lies about the container.

Path A: shoot Most Compatible on the iPhone

Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible if you want new Camera shots saved as JPEG. That setting does not convert the HEIC photos already in your library. For one-off shares, the Photos share sheet sometimes offers a compatible format depending on destination; do not assume every share re-encodes. When you must keep HEIC masters for space but occasionally need JPG, keep Path B ready instead of permanently switching formats.

Path B: convert in the browser on this site

1. On the phone or after AirDrop/cable copy to a computer, open HEIC to JPG (use HEIC to PNG when you need transparency or lossless text).

2. Start with a single representative photo, not a 200-image album.

3. Choose a quality preset. Set maximum width to 0 to keep decoded dimensions, or enter a smaller width when a form caps pixels.

4. Download the result and open it in the exact app or form that rejected HEIC.

5. Only after that check succeeds, convert the remaining photos. Download individually or as a ZIP when the batch is large.

Image bytes are decoded in the browser. The page and HEIC decoder assets still load over the network; Privacy explains analytics and advertising separately.

Failure edges you should plan for

Live Photos: the conversion produces a static image from decoded pixels. It does not export the paired motion video or a complete Live Photo bundle.

Multi-image HEIC: some containers hold bursts or several images; the fallback decoder may select one frame only. Do not treat the output as an archive of every embedded image.

Memory: very large Pro-resolution originals can exhaust Safari or Chrome on older phones. Export a smaller copy from Photos first, or convert on a desktop browser with more RAM.

Unsupported variants: damaged files or uncommon HEIC features may fail. Open the source in an app that already displays it, export JPEG/PNG there, then use the matching tool here if you still need resizing.

Batch and size caps on the tool page (file count, MiB per file, megapixel ceiling) still apply. Hitting a limit is a hard stop, not a partial silent success.

JPG versus PNG for iPhone sources

Choose JPG for ordinary camera photos headed to email, résumés and most upload forms—smaller files and broad compatibility. Choose PNG when the subject is a screenshot with fine text, UI chrome, or when a design tool demands lossless pixels and optional transparency. PNG outputs are often much larger than JPG for the same photo. For format theory, see the HEIC JPG-or-PNG guide; this article is the device path and failure catalogue.

Verify before you delete the HEIC master

Open the downloaded file’s Info/Properties panel and confirm pixel dimensions and file size. Check orientation, faces and any text in the frame. Keep the original HEIC until the destination accepts the derivative. If Mail still attaches HEIC, attach the JPG from Files explicitly rather than sharing the Camera Roll item again.
