How to use it
Paste text or a URL into the box.
Choose a mode and press Encode or Decode.
What is URL encoding?
URLs may only contain a limited set of ASCII characters. Anything else, such as spaces, accented letters, Chinese characters or symbols that have a special meaning in URLs, is written as a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits for each UTF-8 byte. A space becomes %20, an ampersand becomes %26, and the letter é becomes %C3%A9. This is called percent-encoding and is defined in RFC 3986.
Which mode should I choose?
Component encodes everything except letters, digits and - _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). Use it for a single query value or path segment, for example a search term, because it also encodes &, =, ? and /. Full URL leaves the characters that structure a URL untouched, so it is suitable for cleaning up a whole link that contains spaces or non-English text. Form mode writes spaces as plus signs, as HTML forms do in application/x-www-form-urlencoded data, and decodes plus signs back to spaces.
Common problems
Double encoding happens when already encoded text is encoded again, turning %20 into %2520; decode until the text stops changing. A decoding error usually means a lone percent sign or an incomplete sequence such as %E4%B8. Remember that a plus sign means a space only in form data, not in the path of a URL.
Privacy
Links can contain tokens, email addresses or tracking IDs. This converter processes the pasted text locally and does not send it to a conversion server or save it as a persistent draft. The input limit is 10 MiB of UTF-8 text. Website requests are separate from this processing and are described in Privacy; copied or downloaded results remain wherever you save them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
encodeURI keeps characters such as : / ? & = that give a URL its structure; encodeURIComponent encodes them too, so it is the right choice for individual values.
Why does my URL contain %2520?
It was encoded twice. Decode it twice to get the original text.
Is + the same as a space?
Only in form-encoded query strings. Elsewhere a literal space must be %20.
Is my input stored?
This tool does not persist the conversion input as a draft. Working input stays in the current page until it is cleared or reloaded; copies and downloads remain with you. This is separate from website traffic described in Privacy.
