What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp, also called epoch time or POSIX time, counts the seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. Because it is a single number with no time zone attached, it is the most common way for servers, databases and programming languages to store a moment in time. The value 0 is the start of 1970, 1,000,000,000 was reached in September 2001, and values around 1.7 to 1.8 billion are normal today.
Seconds, milliseconds and microseconds
Different systems use different units. Unix tools, PHP and most SQL databases use seconds (10 digits for current dates). JavaScript's Date.now(), Java and many JSON APIs use milliseconds (13 digits). Some logging systems and Python libraries use microseconds (16 digits). When the unit is set to automatic, this converter treats values of 100 billion or more as milliseconds and values of 100 trillion or more as microseconds; choose the unit yourself if the guess is wrong.
How to use it
Paste a timestamp and press Convert to see the date in UTC, in your time zone.
To go the other way, pick a date and time, choose whether it is your local time or UTC, and press Convert.
Press Use now to fill in the current time.
Time zones and daylight saving
A timestamp is always UTC. The "your time zone" line uses the time zone your device reports, including daylight saving rules, so the same timestamp will show a different local time for a colleague in another country. When you convert a local date to a timestamp around a daylight-saving change, a clock time can be skipped or repeated; your browser chooses one of the possible moments.
The year 2038 problem
Older systems store timestamps as a signed 32-bit integer, which runs out at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Modern operating systems and languages use 64-bit values, and this converter handles dates far beyond 2038 as well as negative timestamps before 1970.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Unix timestamp the same everywhere?
Yes. The number refers to one instant worldwide; only the local clock time shown for it differs by time zone.
Why is my date in 1970 or far in the future?
The unit is probably wrong: a millisecond value read as seconds lands tens of thousands of years ahead, and a seconds value read as milliseconds lands in January 1970. Choose the unit manually.
Does it account for leap seconds?
No. Like almost all computer systems, Unix time ignores leap seconds.
Is anything sent to a server?
Timestamp conversion is calculated in the browser; these inputs are not sent to a conversion server. Loading the page and its scripts can make network requests. See Privacy for advertising and analytics traffic.
