How to convert WAV to MP3

Tap the box above and choose a WAV file.

Adjust the options if you want.

Wait while the converter loads (first time only) and runs; progress is shown below.

Download the MP3 file, or play it first to check it.

When you need this

A voice recorder, audio interface or DAW exported a WAV that is too big to send.

A website or podcast host asks for MP3.

You want to save space on your phone or in cloud storage.

About WAV

WAV is an uncompressed audio format from Microsoft and IBM. CD-quality stereo WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) takes about 10 MB per minute. Because nothing is thrown away it is the standard format for recording and editing, but it is impractical for sharing.

About MP3

MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. It uses lossy compression: at 192 kbps a minute of stereo audio takes about 1.4 MB, and most listeners cannot tell it from the original. 128 kbps is fine for speech; 320 kbps is the highest standard MP3 bitrate.

How it works

This page runs FFmpeg, the open-source media toolkit, compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project. The single-threaded build (@ffmpeg/core 0.12.10) is loaded from this site's own program files under /vendor/ffmpeg/. Before use, the page checks each downloaded asset's byte size and SHA-256 hash against the packaged resource manifest; incomplete or mismatched assets are rejected. Your file is then copied into the converter's memory inside your browser tab, the first audio track is encoded to MP3 with the LAME encoder at the bitrate you choose; the video picture is discarded. The conversion process does not upload the selected media file.

Download size and limits

First load: the packaged FFmpeg resources total about 32.4 MB uncompressed (30.9 MiB), mainly WebAssembly. Transfer time depends on the connection and browser cache; a later visit may need to download them again.

Limits: 5 files, 250 MiB per input, 500 MiB per batch and 500 MiB per output. The input, intermediate data and result share browser memory, so a task can fail below these caps. Use a smaller file or batch if that happens.

The single-threaded converter can be slow, especially when re-encoding video. Copy-protected (DRM) media is unsupported.

Frequently asked questions

Is this WAV to MP3 converter free?

Yes. It is free, requires no sign-up and adds no watermark. This tool accepts up to 5 files per batch; processing is also limited by browser memory, file size and supported formats.

Is my file uploaded?

The conversion code processes your selected file inside this browser without uploading it to a conversion server. Loading the site and converter still makes network requests; advertising or analytics traffic is described separately in Privacy.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

About 32.4 MB of uncompressed FFmpeg resources (30.9 MiB) must first be loaded and verified. Cached resources may speed up later use, but the browser can remove them and require another download.

What is the largest file I can convert?

250 MiB per input, with at most 5 files and 500 MiB combined; each output is capped at 500 MiB. Available memory may require smaller files, especially on phones. These caps do not guarantee successful conversion.

Which bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default for music. Use 128 kbps for speech to get smaller files, or 320 kbps if you want the highest MP3 quality. Converting cannot improve on the quality of the original audio.
