Organize an idea into smaller, connected topics

A mind map is useful when a subject is easier to understand as a set of branches. Start with the project plan example or add a central topic of your own. Create topics for research, work, review or any categories that help you think. Connect a parent topic to each child with the connection form. You can move topics freely on the canvas, change their titles in the properties panel and use coordinates for a more regular arrangement. The map deliberately uses a simple tree model: one topic can have only one parent, and a connection that creates a cycle is rejected with an explanation.

Keep the structure useful as the map grows

Use short labels for the main branches and split a long thought into several child topics. This makes the exported image easier to read on a slide or phone. Select a connection to change its parent and child, or delete it before reconnecting a topic elsewhere. Deleting a topic removes its attached connections but does not silently delete all its descendants. Separate topics can be connected again as you reorganize the outline. Undo and Redo help compare two arrangements. The text format is Mermaid flowchart LR, which represents the tree with ordinary nodes and arrows. It is not Mermaid mindmap syntax, and the import panel states that distinction. Simple flowchart text can be imported only when it satisfies the one-parent, no-cycle rules.

Keep an editable copy as well as an image

The editor runs in your browser. Diagram content is not sent to a conversion server, and no account is required. Changes are saved in localStorage for this browser and this tool. That is convenient for returning to a draft, but it is not a backup: private browsing, clearing site data, or changing devices can remove access to it. Download the Mermaid file whenever you reach a useful milestone. It contains the diagram structure and a comment with the current node positions. SVG is useful for documents and high resolution printing; PNG is useful for slides and messages. Both contain the diagram itself, without editor controls. Before sharing, open the exported file and check that all labels are readable. Very large PNG exports are rejected with a visible error; move nodes closer together or choose SVG. The ZIP bundle collects a matching PNG, SVG, Mermaid file and JSON model in one download. Use the Mermaid contents when importing back into this editor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import Mermaid mindmap syntax directly?

No. This editor uses the documented flowchart LR subset for text interchange. Paste a compatible flowchart tree, or create topics with the controls. Unsupported syntax produces a visible error and leaves the current map intact.

Can I create cross-links between branches?

A topic cannot have a second parent or take part in a cycle. Use the flowchart tool when the subject needs a general network of many-to-many links. This restriction keeps the mind map understandable as a hierarchy.
